Why is an onion storage structure needed?

Reports suggest that the state lacks proper infrastructure for onion storage. Farmers suffer financial losses due to selling their goods at low prices. Inadequate storage facilities result in the risk of crops getting damaged and spoiled. This new program will benefit farmers by getting higher market prices and keeping their goods safe.

Onion storage facilities will be available in 22 districts

Through the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana, the central government is assisting the state government in implementing this facility. In the first phase of this program in 2025-2026, 22 districts of the state have been included. These include Gaya, Khagaria, Madhubani, Munger, Nalanda, Patna, Purnia, Rohtas, Samastipur, Vaishali, Kaimur, Lakhisarai, Nawada, Saran, Sheikhpura, Siwan, Aurangabad, Banka, Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Buxar.

What is the amount of subsidy?

Farmers will get a subsidy of up to 75% or Rs 4.50 lakh for the construction of onion storage structures, with a maximum cost of Rs 6 lakh. This amount will be sent to the farmers’ account in two installments through DBT (Direct Benefit Transfer).

This is how you will get the benefit of the scheme

To get the benefit of this program, farmers have to apply online. To apply, you have to visit the website (http://horticulture.bihar.gov.in). Farmers have to start construction of the structure within 15 days of acceptance of the application. If the work is not started on time, the order can also be cancelled.

Which farmers will be given priority?

  • Under this program, priority will be given to farmers who grow onions on a large scale.
  • Agricultural Producer Organizations, FPOs and farmer groups can also benefit from this program.

Benefits for farmers
