What is gypsum and what are its benefits?

Gypsum is rich in calcium, sulfur and other nutrients, which is a form of natural mineral. It is used to enhance the quality of soil and provide nutrition to the crop. The unique feature of gypsum is that it increases the soil’s ability to retain water while balancing the pH level of the field. As a result, crops can produce a good amount of food in less water and remain wet for a longer period of time.

Farmers will get direct benefit

Under this program of the state government, farmers will now get up to a 75% gypsum subsidy. This means that farmers will be able to buy a bag of gypsum for just 25% of the actual price of Rs 216.10 or about Rs 54. Farmers will get the benefit of lower costs and higher yields, which will increase their income.

How much gypsum will be available?

According to the report, a farmer will get six quintals or twelve bags, of gypsum for a maximum of two hectares of land. Farmers will get this gypsum through government seed shops spread across the blocks of the district. Farmers there can get gypsum at a subsidy by submitting their Aadhaar card, identity card and land records.

Which crops benefit the most from this?

  • Pulses: lentil, tur, moong and gram
  • Mustard, sunflower, sesame and groundnut are examples of oilseed crops.
  • Root crops include sweet potatoes, radishes, potatoes and carrots.

When gypsum is added to these crops, the roots grow better and the plants become more robust. As a result, production has increased by 15-25%.

How to apply?

Farmers can get gypsum by contacting their nearest government seed store or Krishi Kendra. To apply, they will need a copy of the farmer registration, Aadhaar card and land-related document.
