Farmers of Chamba, a nearby area of Kangra, are also worried because the invasion of Fall Army Worm has completely destroyed the maize crop in many places. This bug has taken over almost half of the maize crop of the district. Therefore, we are going to tell you how to get rid of these pests.

Fall Army Worm is a harmful insect

The night flight range of this insect is about 100 kilometers. Often, it damages crops at night. This insect damages maize from the time of cultivation to harvesting. The upper surface of the leaves, which is covered with a white layer, is where the female insect lays 50 to 200 eggs. Its larvae first scratch the leaves, causing circular holes and white streaks on the leaves. The caterpillar eats the leaves rapidly, causing severe damage to the crop.

Measures to avoid fall armyworm

The first step to prevent fall armyworm is to treat the crop with chemical pesticides, such as systemic pesticides like Emamectin and drugs like Lambda that kill pests through direct contact. Next, the entire field should be sprayed with Trichoderma Trichocard, which kills the pest eggs, every four to seven days. Additionally, male and female pests and their eggs should be handpicked to destroy them. To guarantee efficient control of fall armyworm, this process should be repeated at different stages of the pest’s development.

Agricultural scientist’s recommendation

According to agricultural expert Shamsher Nayak, fall armyworms are very powerful pests that have the ability to completely destroy crops in a single day. It goes through five or six stages of development, during which prompt management is required. He said the best way to prevent the fall armyworm is to sow the maize crop in advance.

Sowing 100 kg of neem seeds per acre in the field can prevent the development of the pest in the pupa stage. Besides, install pheromone traps to keep an eye on autumn armyworm moths and remove egg clusters. If the pest levels are very high, then insecticides like Betake 2 ml or Spineterm 11.7% SC 0.5 ml should be sprayed in one liter of water.
