Sugarcane Farming
Sugarcane farming has been going on in Sartaj Khan’s family for about 50 years. Since childhood, he learned the nuances of farming from his father, who was also a skilled farmer. It was because of his father’s teachings that he developed a deep respect and love for farming.
Sartaj took forward the family legacy and adopted farming with a contemporary approach and inventive attitude. He realized that farming can become a lucrative and long-lasting venture with the right kind of hard work.
Out of Sartaj Khan’s 70 acres of land, 50 acres are cultivated with sugarcane. He named his farm “Shahid Farm,” which is now a well-known brand in the neighborhood.
High-yielding sugarcane varieties, including 13235, 0118, 14201 and 16202, are among them. He earns a good amount from these varieties, which yield around 720 quintals per acre.
Sartaj cultivates sugarcane using trench technology, which involves sowing two-eyed sugarcane sets. This method promotes better germination and strong plant growth.
He maintains a row spacing of 2.5 to 4 feet, which makes crop management easier. He uses small tractors for large areas and power tillers for small areas for cultivation.
Earn More Money with a Strategy
Furthermore, Sartaj Khan uses mixed cropping. He grows mustard, cauliflower, cabbage, wheat, gram and peas in addition to sugarcane. Thanks to this strategy, he earns more money and is able to pay for his expenses.
His large income is a result of the cost of about Rs 40,000 per acre of cultivating sugarcane, which produces about 720,000 buds per acre.
Sartaj Khan’s experience shows that farming can be made a viable venture by using contemporary technology, selecting appropriate crop types and using mixed cropping methods. For hundreds of farmers today, he serves as an inspiration and role model.
