Success Story: Gurmeet Singh was born in a tiny Punjabi hamlet in the Moga region into a farming family. Rotating Your Crops Wisely to Increase Income All Year Long
Snowball, Giriraj, and Pusa Meghna are some of the hybrid cauliflower kinds that Gurmeet grows from October to February. He uses staggered harvesting to ensure a consistent supply in the market since these types mature at various periods. Depending on the season, he typically receives a yield of 120 to 140 quintals per acre. He makes up to Rs. 1.5 lakh per acre from this crop alone.
He promptly prepares the area for tomatoes once the cauliflower is harvested. He uses cultivars like Rani, Yogi, and Uphaar to grow high-quality hybrid tomatoes from March to June. These cultivars are excellent for different market timings, have a good shelf life, and are resistant to disease. He receives 700 to 1500 crates per acre, earning between Rs. 1 lakh and Rs. 2 lakh per acre, depending on the time of year and market price.
Gurmeet switches to paddy when the tomato harvest is over, but he plants short-duration Basmati types like Pusa 1509 or PB-1121 in place of the typical long-duration rice. In this manner, he may harvest the crop around 110 days ahead of the next cauliflower-growing season. Based on the market price and yield, which typically averages 60 quintals per acre, he may earn between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 70,000 per acre from basmati rice. In order to supplement his income from his own farm, he also plants watermelon and muskmelon on his property.
Innovating to Triple Land Productivity
His property is never left fallow because of this well-thought-out crop rotation program. Gurmeet now harvests three crops a year instead of two, thereby increasing his land utilization and revenue. However, his harvests of Basmati rice and cauliflower were unaffected because of his varied approach. After that, he was able to make up the losses. Future Plans: Exotic Vegetables and Drip Irrigation
