Australia: Precision Plastics Industry as an Experienced Toolmaker in Melbourne’s West
Australia: Piber Plastics Pty Ltd, a well-established injection and blow moulding specialist, has an immediate opening for a qualified Toolmaker at its modern facility in Derrimut, Victoria. If you take pride in building and maintaining high-performance mould tools that shape everyday plastic products, this full-time role offers the perfect platform to showcase your craftsmanship in a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

What the Role Entails Day-to-Day
Working a standard 38-hour week, you will be hands-on with every stage of the toolmaking lifecycle. From reading complex CAD drawings and marking out raw material to final polishing and trial runs, your attention to detail directly impacts product quality and production efficiency. The position involves operating both conventional lathes, mills, grinders and modern CNC machining centres to produce or refurbish injection and blow moulding tools. Regular tasks include diagnosing mould faults, carrying out repairs, applying protective coatings, constructing jigs and fixtures, and pouring resin or fibreglass when specialist components are required.
Key Technical Responsibilities
Successful candidates spend considerable time interpreting technical drawings and specifications to achieve tight tolerances essential for plastic forming applications. Precision measuring instruments – micrometres, vernier callipers, bore gauges and CMM equipment – are used daily to verify dimensions before and after machining. Assembling multi-part moulds, conducting tool trials, identifying dimensional deviations, and making corrective adjustments are all part of delivering tools that perform flawlessly on the production floor.
Collaboration and Continuous Improvement
Toolmakers at Piber Plastics work closely with design engineers and production supervisors to suggest practical design enhancements that reduce cycle times and extend tool life. Maintaining detailed records of modifications, preventive maintenance schedules, and surface treatment applications helps the entire team predict and prevent downtime. Your input during new product introduction meetings is genuinely valued because real-world shop-floor experience often reveals opportunities that drawings alone cannot show.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold at minimum an AQF Certificate III in Engineering – Toolmaking (or equivalent trade qualification that includes at least two years of structured on-the-job training) or an AQF Certificate IV in a related discipline. At least one year of post-trade experience in mould tool maintenance, repair or new tool manufacture within the plastics industry is essential. Demonstrated proficiency on both manual and CNC equipment, along with the ability to work from engineering drawings without supervision, forms the foundation we build upon.
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for someone who combines technical skill with practical problem-solving ability. You remain calm when a high-cavitation mould is down and methodically work through root-cause analysis until the tool is back in production. Safety consciousness, reliability and clear communication are non-negotiable. The ability to work autonomously on urgent repairs while still contributing positively during team-based projects sets top performers apart.
Remuneration and Benefits
The successful applicant will receive an attractive annual salary between $75,000 and $85,000 (depending on experience) plus compulsory superannuation. Being part of a stable, privately owned Australian manufacturer means you enjoy genuine job security, ongoing skills development and the satisfaction of seeing products you helped create on retail shelves nationwide.
Take the Next Step Today
If you are a trade-qualified Toolmaker seeking a long-term role where quality workmanship is recognised and rewarded, we encourage you to apply without delay. Bring your expertise to a company that has built its reputation on precision, innovation and outstanding customer service.
