Enterprise Digital: The role of Head of Digital has become one of the most critical leadership positions in today’s financial institutions. As banks, investment firms, and wealth management organizations continue to evolve, the demand for structured, execution-focused digital leadership has never been higher. This position sits at the intersection of technology, business strategy, regulation, and client experience, ensuring that digital initiatives are not only innovative but also commercially viable and compliant.

Enterprise digital

Role Overview

The Head of Digital is responsible for defining, governing, and delivering the enterprise-wide digital strategy across core banking platforms, customer-facing applications, investment systems, and digital data infrastructure. This role carries full accountability for end-to-end digital delivery, ensuring that complex programmes are executed on time, within budget, and aligned with strategic, regulatory, and commercial objectives. Close collaboration with executive leadership, investment teams, and control functions is essential to drive scalable growth, strong investment performance, and superior client outcomes.

Digital Strategy and Enterprise Transformation

At the heart of the role is ownership of the enterprise digital vision and a clearly defined multi-year transformation roadmap. The Head of Digital translates high-level strategic objectives into well-scoped, prioritised, and sequenced digital programmes. Each initiative is designed to directly support revenue growth, assets under management expansion, operational efficiency, and long-term investment performance. This strategic alignment ensures that digital transformation delivers measurable business value rather than isolated technology upgrades.

Programme and Project Management Ownership

A core responsibility of the role is enterprise-level programme and project management oversight. The Head of Digital establishes and leads a central digital PMO that governs prioritisation, budgeting, resourcing, risk management, and performance reporting. Delivery methodologies are selected pragmatically, balancing Agile, Waterfall, or Hybrid approaches to suit regulatory constraints and business needs. Continuous tracking of milestones, dependencies, benefits realisation, and execution risks ensures transparency and accountability across all initiatives.

Core Banking Platform Modernisation

Modern financial institutions require resilient and scalable core banking systems. The Head of Digital oversees the digital enablement and modernisation of platforms covering deposits, lending, payments, general ledger, treasury, and integrations with custody and settlement systems. A strong focus is placed on API-driven architectures to enable seamless connectivity with digital channels and investment platforms, while maintaining operational resilience and regulatory compliance.

Customer-Facing Applications and Digital Channels

Customer experience is a key differentiator in financial services. The role owns all customer-facing digital applications, including mobile and online banking, investor portals, and advisor platforms. End-to-end digitisation of onboarding, client verification, suitability assessments, transaction execution, reporting, and servicing journeys is driven with a strong emphasis on usability, security, and performance across all client segments.

Investment, Asset, and Wealth Platforms

The Head of Digital also oversees platforms supporting investment management, asset management, private markets, and wealth mandates. This includes digitising the full investment lifecycle, from origination and due diligence through execution, portfolio monitoring, valuation, performance measurement, and exits. Seamless integration with banking, custody, treasury, and reporting systems ensures consistency and data integrity across the enterprise.

Data, Analytics, and Decision Enablement

A unified data and analytics framework is essential for informed decision-making. The role establishes enterprise-wide data capabilities spanning client, banking, and investment domains. Advanced analytics are leveraged to support investment risk assessment, portfolio optimisation, client personalisation, and revenue optimisation, while maintaining strong data governance, lineage, and regulatory reporting standards.

Governance, Risk, and Regulatory Alignment

Strong governance underpins all digital initiatives. The Head of Digital embeds regulatory, risk, compliance, and cybersecurity controls into programme delivery. Effective change management, third-party oversight, and vendor governance ensure that delivery partners operate within defined risk frameworks and regulatory expectations.

Leadership and Stakeholder Management

Success in this role depends on the ability to lead multidisciplinary teams across product, architecture, data, engineering, UX, and PMO functions. The Head of Digital acts as a trusted advisor to the executive committee and board, providing clear insights into delivery progress, risks, and outcomes. Close coordination with senior leaders across technology, operations, risk, compliance, finance, and business lines ensures alignment and shared accountability.

Ideal Candidate Profile

The ideal candidate brings over 15 years of experience in digital transformation, technology delivery, or programme leadership within banking, investment management, or wealth management. A strong background in managing large-scale programmes in regulated environments is essential, supported by deep knowledge of core banking systems, digital channels, and investment platforms. Commercial acumen, coupled with an execution-driven mindset, enables the leader to link digital delivery to financial performance and long-term value creation.
