JOBS IN UK: A new contract opportunity has emerged in the UK technology hiring space for experienced professionals specialising in advanced data and AI systems, particularly those with existing or previous high-level security clearance.

Uk defence cleared data scientist contract

Six-Month Contract Role with Hybrid Work Model

An established UK-based client, supported by LA International, is currently seeking a Data Scientist or Data Engineer for an initial six-month contract assignment. The role falls outside IR35 and follows a hybrid working arrangement, with on-site presence required in Milton Keynes alongside remote work.

Due to the sensitive nature of the project, applicants must already hold active DV (Developed Vetting) clearance before starting. Candidates who have previously held high-level clearance are also encouraged to apply, as revalidation may be possible depending on individual circumstances.

Focus on Large Language Models and AI Platforms

The position places strong emphasis on hands-on experience with Large Language Models. Professionals who have worked extensively with LLM evaluation, deployment, and real-world implementation will find their skills particularly relevant. The client is looking for individuals comfortable working with on-premise, open-source technology stacks rather than purely cloud-managed solutions.

Experience with Azure Cognitive Services is central to the role. This includes practical exposure to language processing tools, text analytics, speech services, and other AI-driven capabilities within the Azure ecosystem. A solid understanding of how OpenAI’s GPT models integrate with Azure services, including their strengths and limitations, is also expected.

Programming and Backend Development Requirements

Strong programming capability is a core requirement, with Python being the primary language used for data manipulation and integration with Azure-based services. Familiarity with backend development using technologies such as NodeJS, Python, or Golang will be essential for day-to-day responsibilities.

Candidates should also be comfortable working with databases, particularly relational systems like Postgres. While the role is heavily backend-focused, some exposure to frontend frameworks such as React or Angular is preferred, enabling smoother collaboration with UI and application teams.

Cloud, Containerisation, and DevOps Experience

In addition to Azure expertise, experience with other major cloud platforms such as AWS or GCP will be viewed positively. The role also involves working within clustered and containerised environments, so practical knowledge of Kubernetes, Docker, Helm, and Rancher is highly desirable.

Understanding how to manage, deploy, and maintain applications across clustered systems will be important, especially in secure and regulated environments. Familiarity with UI design tools like Figma, particularly for reviewing or collaborating on interface mockups, adds further value.

Certifications and Broader Technical Exposure

While not mandatory, relevant cloud or AI certifications can strengthen an application. Developer-level cloud certifications, Azure AI credentials, or equivalent qualifications demonstrate a commitment to professional development and technical depth.

The client is also open to candidates with broader exposure to data engineering workflows and machine learning models, particularly those who can bridge the gap between research, engineering, and production deployment.

Security Clearance and Recruitment Partner Details

Given the urgency and security sensitivity of the project, the role is best suited to professionals already familiar with working in cleared environments. Successful applicants will need to complete security clearance processes before appointment, which can take a minimum of 18 weeks if not already active.

The vacancy is being managed by LA International, a UK government-approved ICT recruitment and project solutions consultancy. The company operates globally and is recognised for its work across both public and private sector technology projects. LA International has received multiple industry awards, including Recruiter Awards for Excellence and the Queen’s Award for Enterprise in International Trade.
