What the Welfare Lead Role Actually Looks Like Day-to-Day

As Welfare Lead, you become the heartbeat of student and staff well-being at the campus. You are the first point of contact when someone feels unwell, homesick, or simply needs advice. Your responsibilities range from booking medical appointments and arranging meals for students who are under the weather, to offering a listening ear during moments of homesickness. Every case is carefully logged and tracked through an online system, ensuring nothing slips through the cracks and weekly updates keep the entire school team informed about any ongoing medical or pastoral needs.

Beyond individual support, you play a central part in the smooth running of the programme. You help orchestrate arrival days, deliver briefings to newly arrived staff, communicate daily activity schedules, and work closely with the activity and academic teams. When student behaviour or attendance raises concern, you are empowered to address issues promptly while knowing exactly when to escalate matters to the Campus Manager.

The role also includes sharing the out-of-hours emergency phone on a fair rota, meaning you are always ready to respond calmly and professionally whenever duty calls.

Skills and Experience That Make You Stand Out

Successful candidates bring a natural ability to connect with teenagers and young adults from every corner of the globe. Previous customer-facing experience – especially within education, summer camps, hospitality, or youth work – is highly valued, as is demonstrable emotional intelligence and a calm approach under pressure.

You must be fluent in English, confident working in a truly international environment, and comfortable using online reporting tools. Most importantly, you need that “never settle” mindset: always looking for ways to improve the student and staff experience rather than simply doing the minimum.

A clear enhanced DBS check (formerly CRB), satisfactory references, and the legal right to work in the UK are mandatory. Because this is a residential post, you will live on campus throughout the contract, with comfortable staff accommodation and all meals provided completely free of charge.

Why EF Oxford Brookes Feels Different from Other Summer Jobs

Working at EF is never just a paycheck. Staff consistently describe the atmosphere as energetic, supportive, and genuinely international. Social events are frequent, friendships cross borders, and professional development is taken seriously. Every summer team member receives training in safeguarding and mental health first aid, adding valuable qualifications to your CV.

Many Welfare Leads return season after season, and a large number progress into year-round roles within EF, both in the UK and abroad. The company actively encourages staff to innovate, take ownership of ideas, and fast-track their careers. In short, ambition is noticed and rewarded.

What Current and Former Staff Say About the Experience

“I get to practice my Spanish, Arabic, and Italian every single day – and I’m paid to do it!” “Even on the busiest days, we laugh a lot and support each other. The team spirit is unreal.” “Seeing a homesick 14-year-old arrive nervous and leave confident and happy is the best feeling in the world.” “I started as Activity Leader five years ago.
